The best thing to happen to my son was when he was deemed gifted by the school board and offered a place in a segregated class. Many people are opposed on principle to a segregated class for gifted kids. To me, it was the answer to our prayers. I’m not entirely sure how aware my son was of his social difficulties, I think he wasn’t very aware at all. But as a mom of two kids, it’s easy to see when one child gets invited to birthday parties and play-dates and the other child is not. Once my son was in the gifted class – he started making friends, and keeping friends! I think this is exactly what he needed to succeed socially – kids like him!
